Nollywood melodrama, Senegalese auteur cinema, Kingston reggae films, Kenyan crime thrillers — one map, filtered by scene, language, country and festival award. Built light, on purpose.
African cinema isn’t one thing. Each industry has its own language, audience and history — so these are the names people actually use, not a dropdown of country codes.
What’s getting attention on TMDB right now, weighted toward the last decade and restricted to titles with a verified African country of origin — not whatever racked up the most views over 20+ years of daily episodes, and not a Hollywood film about the diaspora with no African production behind it.
The grand prize of FESPACO in Ouagadougou, Africa’s oldest and largest film festival, awarded biennially since 1972 — a canon the general movie databases don’t index.

African festival awards aren’t systematically indexed anywhere else. Where a festival awards international cinema, only its African winners are recorded — never a partial list passed off as complete.
General movie databases treat African and diasporic film as a footnote, and assume everyone’s on fibre. Neither is true here.
Every title’s country tag was cross-checked against production data, not guessed from a title match — foreign films that merely filmed on location get filtered out, not counted as local.
Yoruba, Wolof, Swahili, Amharic, Zulu — search by the language actually spoken on screen, pulled from structured language data, not inferred from country alone.
No webfonts, no tracking scripts. Flip on Data Saver in the header and posters are replaced with generated covers — the page still tells you what everything is, just lighter. Your choice sticks.
